KIRKUS REVIEW

Fictionized account of the black king of Haiti, born a slave, who dreamed of freedom for his country and his people -- and for a time achieved it. The version of his early life which tells of his being sold and resold -- first to a ship captain, then to an innkeeper -- is the one followed; his tyranny is minimized, his ideals stressed, and his flamboyant pretensions to grandeur are taken seriously. His amazing achievements are stressed, and the whole emerges as a sympathetic picture.
