KIRKUS REVIEW

This West Coast Mary Hartman--52 glossy-paged episodes, spiral-bound, with painterly, somber illustrations by Tom Cervenak--originally appeared in the Pacific Sun, and only a fraction of the catchphrases, magic mantras, movements, food fetishes, and other Life Stylings will be recognizable, let alone a source of merriment, to the Great Untanned living elsewhere. Kate and Harvey Holroyd are the dream California couple at the dynamic core-center of it all, Staying Mellow while assorted neighbors relate, go through heavy changes, explore options, build kilns, and pamper their bodies with zinc, natural fibers, and Russian yoghurt. Chapter 16: ""Joan joins the Moonies."" Chapter 38: ""Meaningful interaction in a commune."" Chapter 43: ""Fear and loathing at Camp Middle Earth."" A triumph of dogged observation, no doubt, but yellowing fast and not hot to trot.
