In the same format and gorgeous illustrative style, a companion to In the Tall, Tall Grass (1991, Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor), with the succinct rhyming text (``waddle, wade, geese parade''), in bold black, beautifully integrated into art created in the process of making paper from pulp dyed in brilliant colors. This time, the child observer is Oriental; and where the first book moved from noon to night, the implicitly suggested cycle here is from tadpole and gosling to ``Chill breeze, winter freeze.'' “Piggies in the pumpkin patch / peek / and sneak, / under crinkly, / clean sheets, / over growing, / green beans, / behind snoring, sleepy sheep, / into the clover field.” Two curious piglets romp through the clover fields and across the barnyard. They play with cats and chase squirrels until they execute an accidental muddy slide into the bull’s pen: “Squeal!!” They take off, avoiding shrieking geese and spooky trees. They make it past stinging bees and back to the pumpkin patch where snoozing Mama pig awaits…after all that, it’s definitely naptime for all! Rofé’s first and Peterson’s first to co-write as well as illustrate will be a staple for piggie-themed storytimes. The pencil-and-paint illustrations are pudgy, whimsical, frenetic fun, rendered in a muted yellow, brown and green palette. The rhythmic text flows and twists following the oinking hijinks, each preposition nicely bolded. The fun continues on the endpapers, which map the porcine expedition from start to finish. A disappointing twist on a popular theme. More gimmick than engaging.
This noisy board book is designed to thrill tots fascinated with all things construction.
A tactile backhoe digger is center stage on each of the five cutout pages, complete with flaps. Brief rhyming text describes the machine’s actions as it works throughout the day. Animal characters engaged in manual labor or operating other machinery—a bulldozer, crane, road roller, and dump truck—describe more work that goes on at a construction site in small speech bubbles. Finding the mouse in every scene adds to the fun. On each page, a little bird sporting a hard hat invites young builders to press various parts of the silicone digger to activate a range of distinct sounds. The digger’s track pad sounds different from the sound of its arm moving dirt. The problem is that the digger itself is passive; the track pad and arm don’t actually move. The machine stays in the same place on every spread. The caution light beeps but doesn’t light up. Savvy kids will quickly realize that all the sounds are accessible from the first spread without having to turn the pages. The sound is the most engaging part of the book, but with only five sounds, this feature won’t hold most youngsters’ attention for long.
