THE TIGHTROPE MEN

Again one of Mr. Bagley's force-fed adventure stories -- his characters submit to more than the usual wear and tear of the genre -- in which Giles Denison wakes up to see a new face in the mirror (accomplished via tattooing, depilation and silicone) and only a scar on his shin to certify his old self, a very shaky one since an accident. Now in Oslo as Harold Meyrick he's asked to cooperate with two men at the British Embassy who finally believe him and help secure the papers of Meyrick's father (also wanted by the Russians) which have everything to do with X-ray lasers. And Meyrick's daughter and a psychiatrist help keep him together on the long, slightly overlong, field trip to follow. Not Bagley's best but then there's that opener calculated to keep you around until the end.
