I HEAR A NOISE

In the first book that she has written as well as illustrated, Goode (who won a Caldecott Honor for When I Was Young in the Mountains) puts an amusing new twist on the well-worn subject of monsters at bedtime. This time, the dragon-like monster is huge, green, and real: it reaches through an open window to seize a small boy and his terrified mother, wafting them through the night sky to a cloud where its larger siblings snatch its prey. The bullied dragon calls for its Mother, who scolds them all soundly: "". . .take them right back where you found them. . .and don't ever touch them again."" Goode sets her stage in a carefully composed bedroom with dramatic, dark blue shadows; her stylized faces temper the suspense by letting the reader know that the experience is fun as well as scary. Not likely to cure serious fears, but delightful nonetheless; the monsters are worthy descendants of Sendak's.
