The story of Benny Lee, whose family on both sides came of English farming stock, who, after the death of his ineffectual, pedagogic father, went to work on a farm and was happy. But the War brings his mother a second husband and Benny must conform by continuing his interrupted education. The life seems soft and he startles his family by insisting on becoming a veterinary. Clear thinking Marjorie abets him in his plans, marries him and dies in childbirth together with her baby. Broken, Benny finds strength to go on through his sister who has had to give up her artistic career. Wellsian in the lengthy conversations on life, philosophy, youthful rebellions, etc. Well done but not for the casual reader.
