Not many young British naval lieutenants were governors of their own tropical island paradises back in 1792, even if that island was a temporarily captured Spanish outpost and the people ruled were mainly seamen. Hurricane, shipwreck, genuine treasure hunt with rhymed clue, and romance (with the daughter of one of the most important noblemen in pre-Revolutionary France) mark this new tale featuring Ramage set in the exciting era of England's war against France, Spain, and occasionally the unwitting landlubber who had the ill luck to be ""impressed"" into the King's naval service. Nor does Ramage simply have to contend with the terrors of nature and the Empire's enemies, but also with the deadly hostility of an admiral who conducts a vendetta via the official channels of court-martial, assisted of course by a little perjury. The author knows his period, and manages to create an authentic-sounding if implausible fiction in this third novel about a hero who is, of course, too good to be true.
