A third femme (Sylvia- 1960; Phyllis- 1962) in fatale circumstances entails another suspense story which is accelerated and aggravated by more than a little brutality. Johnny Camber, an architect with a small scale job, and an unexciting life with Alice and their youngster Polly, witnesses the death of a man in front of an oncoming subway train. The safe deposit key in his pocket is a reminder of the grim accident and his guilt- he has refused to help him. All kinds of people are after him- and the key; Polly is kidnapped; and the young couple's circumstantial involvement in the venal game ends in a battue aboard a boat... A story which splits seconds to kill time with violent efficiency.
