IT'S SPRING TIME!

An overly sweet confection with unnecessary frosting.

A rabbit family enjoys various spring activities in simple verse and double-page scenes.

Anthropomorphized mom, dad and toddler bunny garden, clean and play in an idealized rural setting. Five lines of stiff verse with the same meter accompany nearly every page: “Birds fly by. / Birds in sky. / Chirp and peep. / Young ones sleep. / It’s nesting time.” The pastel illustrations, likely created digitally, have a deliberately hazy look and a calculatedly cute feel. Sparkling glitter is embedded into details of the art and provides a tactile emphasis on flowers, rainbows, butterflies and more.

An overly sweet confection with unnecessary frosting. (Board book. 18 mos.-3)

HALLOWEEN KITTY

From the Wag My Tail series

A playful and interactive introduction to Halloween.

Kitty wants to play with someone—but this Halloween, everyone is busy!

Kitty is looking for a playmate, but no one has time to play with her. Although she entreats a series of creepy-crawly creatures fit for Halloween—including a bat, a spider, and a crow—everyone is occupied doing what they do best. As the story proceeds, the side characters flap, spin, and caw their excuses, as Kitty’s face gets increasingly disappointed. Finally, Kitty asks a ghost—who, luckily, is always ready for a game of peekaboo, pun very much intended. Yoon’s endearing illustrations make use of a dark, rich palette appropriate for Halloween. The artfully placed text is set in a creatively spooky type, adding to the book’s holiday feel. The story itself is written in simple, playful language that makes excellent use of movement and onomatopoeia and invites children to respond to the illustrations well before they are able to decode words. The tab that moves the kitten’s sturdy, felt-covered tail at the top of the cleverly designed book is easy to use and will make both kids and adults giggle. The kitten’s increasingly sorrowful reactions are also a useful tool for talking to children about empathy and persistence, both evergreen lessons.

CRUNCH! MUNCH! BUNNY

Sounds like a winner, though the animal chorus is a bit thin.

Bunny hunts for carrots but finds noisy animal babies behind each flap instead.

“Bunny hops out of her burrow, / she’s looking for carrots to eat. / Can you help this fluffy friend / find a tasty treat?” The baaas, quacks, chirps, and horsey clip-clopping—activated by light as each of the first four big, shaped flaps lift—are gratifyingly loud and clear. All of the animal figures in the bright color pictures are intensely cute plush toys inserted into simple outdoorsy mixes of painted greenery and photographed flowers and bugs. Even the heaped carrots hiding behind the fifth and final flap are soft and fuzzy, though you’d never know that from the sound as Bunny hops on them (with a really loud boing) and chows down with crunches so comically amplified and rapid that caregivers too will laugh (at least the first dozen or so go-rounds). As no pressing of buttons is required to cue the sound effects, Bunny’s miniodyssey is suited to sharing at a slight remove with groups of toddlers as well as one-on-one. Batteries are replaceable, and there is (thankfully) an on-off switch on the rear cover.

Sounds like a winner, though the animal chorus is a bit thin. (Novelty board book. 18 mos.-2)
