“What happens on Wednesdays is I wake up when it is still dark out.” From dark to dark, a preschooler’s ingenuous narration of her day is a catalogue of the sweetly ordinary sights and events that make up the length and breadth of her reassuringly stable world. Jenkins’s deep understanding of what a small child marks as important informs every line of this tale, from her protagonist’s declaration of independence that “today is not a kissing day” to her very personal map of her neighborhood. That takes her “up the block where we once saw an umbrella caught in a tree, past the bakery where we got that chocolate croissant, across the street, past the daycare where I used to go when I was little. . . . ” Newcomer Castillo’s illustrations evoke Margot Zemach, with thick smudgy lines and a wintertime palette that celebrates the leafless beauty and energy of this intimate patch of Brooklyn. From what is same every Wednesday (the preschool routine) to what is different (late afternoon play), every moment is both as particular as this one unnamed child and as general as every child. Another domestic triumph. (Picture book. 3-6)

When a little pig worries what will happen when he’s away at school, his mother makes him feel better in this reassuring picture-book debut. “You should always remember this,” says mother pig, “I love you when I’m with you and I love you when we’re apart.” “ ‘That means you love me all day long!’ ” the child responds. Burris’s illustrations are cheerful and bright; saturated colors outlined in black make the images look animated as the child goes about his day at school from morning arrival (“I love you when you make a new friend”), to lunch (“I love you when you let a burp sneak out”) and recess (“I love you when you wait for your turn [on the swings]”). Even the rough spots—tripping on shoelaces, spilling juice, or getting stuck on the top of the slide—are smoothed over by mother’s love. At day’s end, mother and son share a bedtime story. Youngsters new to school will see themselves in little pig’s experiences and be buoyed by his triumphs—no matter what, little pig keeps on trucking. Likewise, parents and caregivers will find this useful in its treatment of separation anxiety. (Picture book. 3-5)

An upbeat tale with a much-needed message: Imagination and positivity can save the day.
In this picture book from pop star Kevin Jonas and his wife, TV personality Danielle Jonas, a rainy day forces a child to find an alternate way to enjoy the beach.
Family beach day is one of Bella’s favorite things. She loves splashing in the waves, jumping from rock to rock, and building sand castles. Today, however, the weather isn’t cooperating, but Bella isn’t upset. “It will just have to stop raining. That’s all.” Disappointment sets in when her family tells her that beach day is off. Teary Bella rejects suggested indoor pastimes like board games, musical jam sessions, or reading stories together, and she retreats to her room. Dejected, Bella consoles herself with her stuffed bunny, Mr. Bonkers, until her parents and sister, Emma, knock on her door with a surprise: “BEDROOM BEACH DAY!” With just a few household items—a big lamp for the sun, a fan for the ocean breeze, a blue blanket for water, and pillows for rocks—and a large dose of imagination, Bella’s bedroom is transformed. A flexible attitude from all helps Bella—and readers—realize that things may not always go as planned…but sometimes they can be even better than we expected. Whimsical, cartoonish drawings and a dialogue-driven narrative turn a setback into an uplifting family experience. Bella and her family are light-skinned. (This book was reviewed digitally.)
