KIRKUS REVIEW

Chism Crockett really cared for only one thing- possum hunting with his and-white spotted hounds. But his life was ruled by a hatred of country living, ra things out of the earth, and he was alert to the slightest suspicion to get him up from the vicious slatternly life of the town, and back to the country, where Jarivs and Jane might yet have a chance to avoid the degradation that had overtaken their sister. A sordid, tragic story, told with Caldwell's horrifying clarity of perception of the hostiality, the littleness, the cruelty of the little men he draws. Caldwell enthus? will find this to their pattern; most readers will feel it is a more than twice told - Tobacco Road translated into slightly varied terms.
