An unusual adventure based on the personal experiences of the author of the excellent adult study of the same territory, The People of the Deer (1952), describes here the survival by two boys of a winter in the Barren Lands of northern Canada. Jamie, 17, lives with his Uncle Angus, a trader in the Cree country, and is friendly with a Cree boy, Awasin, and their adventure begins when Awasin is asked to help another tribe hunt for reindeer in the Barrens to the north. The expedition was expected to take three weeks but the boys lose their way and are forced to prepare for a hard winter. Each of their experiences- a reindeer slaughter to provide food and clothing, house building, trouble with marauding animals, the discovery of some old Viking ruins and final rescue- make absorbing episodes that do much to reveal the nature of a fascinating area and the people in it. Not so beautifully written as The People of the Deer, but the events have a documentary quality that provides real suspense.
