When the New Spoon River first appeared in 1924, it goes less attention than its predecessor, Spoon River Anthology (1915), which had been something of a literary shocker. Amherst Professor Willis Barnstone, who prepared this edition, makes a plea for serious consideration of Masters as a forerunner of the best poets of the post-World War II era. In his view, the second Spoon River is the superior achievement.
