KIRKUS REVIEW

Old baseball fans will eat this up. Young ones will feel the contagion of Graham's enthusiasm for his subject. He creates a nostalgic fervor for those who followed the 25 years (1905 ea) when John McGraw managed the New York National Deague Team, the Giants. This is not only grand biography of one of the most colorful figures in American sports, but also a running commentary on all the important baseball events of McGraw's career, the players, the managers, the umpires, the owners. Perhaps today's fa do not know ""ugsy"", -- dominating, domineering, fighter, with an will to win. This is more thrilling reading than Graham's en Geh -- escape reading today.
