This book of meditations will be the Seabury Lenten Book for 1969. The thirteen chapters, of varied lengths, are based on a miscellaneous group of Biblical passages and texts and each concludes with a relevant prayer. As in the author's previous Lenten book, the style is informal, and illuminated with literary allusions and illustrations. The themes have to do with various aspects of faith. But the book lacks the force and sharpness that might challenge the reader to a vigorous reshaping of his faith and religious practice. The overall effect of reading is that of quiet and reassuring reaffirmations. How far these can serve the reader of today may be a question.
