Lady Helen lands in a pretty to-do over her debts, over her brother Dysart's borrowings and her husband's strictures about no further financial failings. For Earl Cardross is hesitant to show he loves his Nell and his Nell has been instructed by her worldly mother to keep her feelings hidden, and there is always the taint of her family's profligate and expensive heritage -- so when Nell is pressed by a dressmaker, when Dysart attempts a highwayman holdup to help her, and when Nell attempts to borrow from moneylenders -- there's quite a stir and quite a bit of dodging so that Cardross be kept ignorant. Cardross' ward, the Lady Letitia, who is also his half sister, adds to the confusion by her passion for the respectable but unworthy civil servant Allendale and, in trying to protect her from the gossiping ""ton"", Nell's small dissemblings come to naught until Cardross breaks down and love shines through. A taming of the Regency rakes here but still ""high in the instep"".
