A strange and rather sordid story, of a girl who at sixteen runs away from an unhappy home, goes to Texas, and starts working in a restaurant. Seduced by a bounder, she is thereafter suspicious of men, but feeling that she needs marriage, she answers an advertisement in a marriage column, and goes on to California to marry a rancher. The story of the tragedy of this marriage, building up bit by bit to her killing her husband, the trial -- and her ultimate confession -- this is the main part of the book. A strange tale, in substance keyed to rental libraries, but too unpleasant for wide appeal.
