CORNBREAD AND MILK

Life on a Kansas farm, before the machine age, is the core of a childhood recalled by Greg, and the excitements, the animals, the seasons and, constantly, the closeness of the family, are part of the nostalgic atmosphere. There are 16 episodes that mirror Paw and Maw, Greg and his younger brothers, Frank and Linsay, the grandparents and relatives, in faithful fashion. The coon dogs, ""flop-eared pot-lickers"", that bring fleas into the house in a flood; Paw's breaking his arm picking cherries for Maw; the unexpectedness of Linsay's collecting habits; the outhouse and a snake nest; a tornado with freakish mischief in its wake; incidents at school; threshing and some of its accidents; Maw's hard times in raising chicks; family gatherings that break out in family troubles; the difficulties in weaning a calf -- all this reflects a time and a place in a small, personal focus and provides some artless, comic moments.
