A book that ought to strike home with many girls treats the problems of first love in a down to earth way that disperses the organdy puff atmosphere of the average romance. Debby, introspective and a high school sophomore, has a miserable time at the senior prom until Buff Allison, a former athletic star now in college, asks her to dance. She is even more thrilled as their association grows through the summer- yet there is something unsteadying about the moody Buff. In comparison with Debby's sister Irene's beau, Buff has an aggressive, chip-on-the-shoulder attitude which Debby can do nothing to change. Eventually, she finds the courage to accept this and takes the disillusionment in her stride. The experience makes her recognize Buff's weakness in sports and his lack of ambition about an education. Sidelights on family relations are well handled for a balanced story in an area too often unrealistically presented.
