SONS OF THE BIG MUDDY

Wheatland, Dakota Territory, a small town on the west bank of the Missouri, is the home of young Lars whose adventures tell the struggle of the Scandinavian wheat farmers to gain a solid footing in the new land. As printer's devil for Elnar Jensen's Norwegian weekly, Lars sees the issues first hand. He sees that the townspeople should learn English and that a Mr. Appleton, typical of the big grain tycoons, whose control on prices and volume of land sale is a block to progress, must be stopped. Einar's editorials instigate Appleton's attempts to wreck the press, but Einar and Lars improvise and win out- for adult education and the promise of larger homesteads. A climactic ending brings plaudits and praises all the way around.
