It’s the Fourth of July in Hamlet, Vt., and all heck is about to break loose. The town that has suffered and survived—in one remarkable year—an infestation of Siberian snow spiders, a haunting by ghostly mammoths, an alien invasion, the attentions of wayward cupids, the hatching of three mutant lizard-chickens and the kidnapping of its beloved fifth-grade teacher, Miss Earth, deserves some rest. But no, just as school gets out and Miss Earth prepares to wed Mayor Grass, the supernatural creatures re-converge; add a predatory newshound, two mad scientists and a bizarre circus, and you know poor Miss Earth has no hope of an uneventful entry into married bliss. Can the now-graduated members of her class—Copycat boys and Tattletale girls and the unaffiliated Thud and Pearl—unite to protect all their peculiar friends? Maguire throws all authorial restraint to the wind, piling impossible onto improbable for a winsome, bittersweet celebration of love and loss and loyalty. It’s an oddly appropriate, entirely endearing end to a series that goes out with neither bang nor whimper, but a thoughtful combination of the two. (Fiction. 8-12)

An action-packed sequel that’s sure to please series fans.
The magically gifted students at Fern’s School for Wayward Fae attempt to head off destruction of their realm.
This second series installment picks up right where the first left off: with Rosemary Thorpe alone and in danger in the Seelie court. She escapes via the Grim Reaper’s home after “borrowing” a hoodie that renders her invisible, then returns to Fern’s School a few hours later—only to learn that she’s been gone for a month, and everyone’s been worrying about her. Rosemary’s gift for foreseeing people’s deaths has made her aware that something terrible is coming to the school, and her teacher Dante’s prophetic abilities have pinpointed her upcoming 13th birthday as the pivotal date. Rosemary and her roommate, Trym, are convinced the Seelie Keeper is behind everything, but the adults—other than Dante—laugh at and dismiss their concerns, leaving the students to investigate on their own and putting them in terrible danger. Fast-paced action sequences will keep readers on the edges of their seats. Those familiar with the events of the first book will experience the most enjoyment while following human-raised Rosemary as she continues to adapt to the magical world in which she finds herself and learns more about her own family. A Korean American tween unlocks hidden magical powers to fulfill her destiny and save her family from a vengeful ancient spirit.
Twelve-year-old Lia Park aspires to one day work at the International Magic Agency, fighting monsters and protecting the world. But Lia’s unsure about her future because, unlike best friend Joon, she hasn’t yet manifested any magical abilities. Before she can take the annual entrance exam for the IMA school, her skills are unexpectedly tested when she discovers her California home ransacked and her parents missing. A message to bring Gaya the missing jewel in exchange for her parents leaves her confused and bewildered: She has no idea who Gaya is or what jewel the kidnapper is talking about. Following clues left by her parents, Lia travels with Joon to Korea to find the jewel that will save her family. While motivated to solve the mystery, Lia also becomes frustrated that her parents’ overprotectiveness kept her from knowing the truth about her powers and the threat Gaya poses. Tense scenes set up the high stakes involved in her quest. This contemporary tale incorporates Korean history, national landmarks, and mythology in an engaging way. Korean words and phrases are also woven throughout the text, reinforcing Lia’s connection to her culture and its integral role in the story.
