EARTH AND HIGH HEAVEN

I found this absorbing reading, controversial in subject matter, but saying something that needs to be said, and saying it through a story that almost never descends to the level of a polemic. Repeatedly while reading this holding, tale I was reminded of the overtones and undertones and emotional tempo of Knight's ""This Above All"". Excellent situations -- good dialog -- well-paced plot -- convincing characterizations for a theme of conflict between Jew and Gentile crossing social barriors in wartime Montreal. The proponents are Erica Drako, member of a prominent British-Canadian family, and Marc Roiser, a Jewish lawyer, brought to the house by a French-Canadian friend of the family, whose sister had married Erica's brother. These three typify three closely guarded circles of Montreal society. And the breaking down of traditions, the relentless opposition posed by Erica's father, tell their own story, a bitter and poignant one. There are scenes that will shock the conservatives; there are things said that will rouse antipathies and intensify awareness. It is not the perfect vehicle for the dangerously explosive subject -- but it comes nearer to being right than anything in the field today... The selection of the book as October Literary Guild choice will precipitate discussion through wide distribution. Watch it.
