SARAH'S QUESTIONS

A summer idyll--mother and small daughter spend an hour roaming a sun-dappled countryside, observing the natural world. Leaving their gardening, the two play ""I Spy."" (Observant readers will enjoy finding more hidden animals than the ducks, squirrel, etc. spied by four-year-old Sarah.) Returning by the same route, Sarah's questions (""Why do squirrels have bushy tails?. . .do dogs dream?"" etc.) recapitulate her earlier observations; they aren't deep, but they're typical. The story is nicely rounded with a hug and finding Grandpa at home. Bonnets' paintings are lush and joyous; her small animals and flowers might be lifted from a medieval tapestry, and the companionable serenity of Sarah and her mother should be an inspiration to parents. A pleasant lap book.
