by Helen Pierce Jacob ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 16, 1976
Though Kate breaks her arm at the start of the summer, she's compensated by meeting Oscar, who's visiting at the local mansion and who immediately breaks his leg in her hayloft. Together they form ""Cripples Inc."" to explore a nearby cave and Kate's old farmhouse for evidence of the underground railroad hideout legend associated with the property. Kate, alone, does find the passageway between the carriagehouse/garage and the riverbank cave entrance, but she's lost inside for three days before two hobos (this is in the '30s) find her and take her home. Jacob arranges her stock situations skillfully enough for a summer afternoon's diversion--though she might have stopped short of the concluding full-cast dinner at the previously off-limits mansion, with even the hobos in Sunday best at the elegant table.
