MAGGIE'S CARAVAN

The author's previous book, The Wild One, (1964; p. 110, J-38) was a solid animal/adventure story. The turnabout here, from boy hero to girl, and from dog to horse has resulted in a frivolous, boneless trifle. Maggie Beaton has the opportunity to buy the odd-jobs-horse from the stable where she works, then learns that her mother, a recuperating widow, is in such a weak financial condition that they will all have to move to their aunt's ranch in Eastend, Canada. Of course transporting a horse all the way from Seattle is out of the question, but how will Maggie be able to break the news to the horse Cream Puff after all her cooing promises of a happy home life? The original owner offers the loan of a trailer, and when the old car breaks down, Cream Puff trudges the rest of the way to Utopia a la Eastend, the Beatons in tow. A plodding story up the Saccharine Trail.
