Neelie is a nine year old girl who lives with Aunt Jiminy and Grandfather in Crickety Creek. A letter from Great-Aunt Amanda brings Neelie a five dollar gold piece which disappears. Neelie is consoled by her talking animal friends, Louisa, a hen, and Minty, a squirrel. But when the gold piece is returned to her, Neelie contributes it to a local peddler who needs a new wagon. Christmas brings fulfillment of an ancient legend and a surprise visit from Great-Aunt Amanda. This is sometimes saccharine, sometimes dull.
