Here is really good regional, historical and Indian material, beautifully told and well woven into the story of Chaske, captive Sioux, brought up by the Sauks under their great leader, Black Hawk, by whom he is adopted. True to his foster-father, Chaske leads the Sauks, even to defeat. The author's sure knowledge of Indian customs, the attitude towards the whites, and the final shame of their conquest makes this a real contribution to the story of Indian past.
