15 FABLES OF KRYLOV

This should find a happy home with older boys and girls (if they can be persuaded past the juvenile format) and should be brought to the attention of adult services librarians who have very few examples of the 19th century Russian fabulists' work from which to choose. Krylov mounted his major attack against hypocrisy as well as general foolishness and his translator's use of language is superb in carrying the sly, pointed tales from Russian to English. The New Yorker's David Pascal provides a full page illustration for each fable in swift, seemingly careless lines that are satirically accurate. Unlike Aesop's more sober, simpler lessons, these are too complicated and sophisticated for the youngest children.
