Written in very brief chapters, Mr. Hacker is a mellow story about a man who moves from city to country and gradually achieves an amiable accommodation with a stray dog and cat; Modell's illustrations have much of Stevenson's own charm and verve. The Stowaway is a rather mild, cartoon-style sequel to The Sea View Hotel (1978); in 1936, Hubie Mouse and his parents voyage to Paris, giving Hubie a chance to explore the luxury ship Hedonia and abet a stowaway. Most interesting is the interactive Quick. . .which invites young readers to help pictured characters by turning pages: a juggling Easter bunny is given fluffy sheep to catch its fragile eggs; and a mouse crosses a room after the reader turns out the light so that it can sneak past a cat--delicious fun for the lapsitter.
