by James Still ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 5, 1939
James Still's volume of verse, Hounds on the Mountain, was a lovely thing. This -- his first novel -- if it can be classed as such, reflects many of the qualities of his poetry, his ability to portray the primitive, destitute Kentucky mountaineers without sentimentalizing and without over-emphasis,by picturing the round of daily activities, by recording the crude, rich argot of the people. There is no tangible plot; it is a modulated still-life of a family, the everyday witnessed the eyes of a small boy. Part of it, as a short story, appeared and won first prize in the current Hansen collection. Under all is Still's awareness of humanity and beauty. Not a good novel, but a book with real beauty, which will appeal to a limited audience.
