The desert of the heart is not as dry as it sounds; it's a little oasis near the well of loneliness moisturized by sentiment. Actually it's in Reno, Nevada, where Evelyn Hall, after many years of marriage to a man she kept in psychiatrists and sleeping pills, comes for a divorce. In the house where she stays she meets Ann Childs and the attraction is an immediate one although Ann is considerably younger and worldlier; she makes change at a local gambling casino but underneath her change apron she's a very mixed up kid. She has had an affair with Bill who runs the joint and wanted to marry her: she also spends odd evenings with a brassy blonde called Silver; and now she falls in love with Evelyn who really ""lives in the desert of the heart."" But as Ann says, a maxim you pick up at the tables, ""if you don't play, you can't lose."" Evelyn decides to play... And some women will indulge-- those who like the confessional with a tonier trim.
