BURRO CANYON

... is the intriguing name of the area in which 12-year-old Cara Fowler's father bought his first ranch for his sheep. When she is told that the name came from the once prevalent, but now nearly extinct, wild burros that roamed the land, she hopes to see the little animals and, if possible, to catch and tame one. As the family becomes immersed in the problems of establishing the ranch, Cara develops a determination to help the small band of burros, which are being illegally harassed by Les Matthews, a brutal, cattle-thieving neighbor. The protrayal of life on a western ranch is the most diverting aspect of this story of a girl who learns to follow through for the first time on one of her many projects.
