by Jeremiah Healy ‧ RELEASE DATE: July 13, 1988
Boston's tough, tender widower P.I. John Cuddy is once again fighting off threats to his license and well-being in an underdog cause (Blunt Darts, etc.). Slightly seedy lawyer Chris Christedes, an old friend from college days, has hired John to sit in on divorce negotiations for his client Hanna Marsh, married to scary, sadistic Roy Marsh, who is represented by sleek, high-powered Felicia Arnold. But Roy's unveiled threats--soon to surface when his small daughter Vickie's kitten is found brutally tortured--become moot when he and prostitute Teri Angel are murdered in a sleazy hotel room, a gun registered to John and recently stolen from him found at the scene. Roy's connection with the local drug mafia, as well as the disappearance of a big drug supply owed to kingpin J.J. Braxley, brings an ominous new menace to Hanna and Vickie--as Roy fights off Braxley's henchmen and Teri's pimp Nine, getting no help from the cops, who seem to have their own game plan. It's a complex mess but John's patient sleuthing pays off with tragic consequences. Heavy on violence, street language, and colorful characters you wouldn't bring home to mother, though Healy manages to keep his hero unprissy but above it all in the best of the Cuddy series.
