THE COLD AND HOT WINTER

In a sequel to The Hot & Cold Summer, the inimitable Bolivia once again sparks rivalry between best friends Row and Derek; the issues here are honesty and trust. During Christmas vacation, Bolivia arrives for another brief visit, bringing to a head a suspicion that Derek has harbored ever since Rory used slightly dishonest tactics to win a school contest. When Bolivia's Swiss army knife goes missing, Derek confides his doubt to Bolivia, who comes up with a plan to trap Rory--who appears to prove his dishonesty by falling for it. However, instead of confessing, he turns the accusations against Derek and Bolivia. Both the vacation and the friendship seem ruined, till a blizzard forces the three to face their lack of trust and try to discover the real truth. Although the three children haven't advanced in either maturity or depth since the previous title, and both the plot and the style are rather plodding and obvious, the satisfying resolution makes this a title Hurwitz fans will welcome.
