THE HOUSE AT SATAN'S ELBOW

Ghosts, disappearing women and Dr. Gideon Fell enliven the house and family at Satan's Elbow. John Dickson Carr is the favorite for the locked room mystery form, even if his characters do speak with a sort of locked jaw formality. This is the pure recreation of suspense and romance, with the latter kept in its pleasant place while the puzzles are solved.
