ANIMALS SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT WEAR CLOTHING

. . . because a giraffe might look sort of silly"" (one, two, three, four, five, six -- seven if you count the bow--ties); ""because it would be disastrous for a porcupine"" whose quills come through and interrupt the polka-dot pattern; ""because a snake would lose it"" (i.e., slither right out of his trousers); and best of all, ""most of all, because it might be very embarrassing"" -- old Jumbo or whoever that elephant is has on the same flowered hat and print dress as the (red-faced) lady. There's no quarreling with the Barretts' inductive reasoning --- they've made their point all right, although just as in Old MacDonald Had an Apartment House (1969) it's one joke and the realization could have been funnier. But it's a fertile joke for preschoolers, who definitely will not keep straight faces.
