It's not an easy book to describe, for it has its own special enchantment. It runs on a double track:- (1) it is the very real story of a little girl who goes to visit her uncle and cousins in an old Dutch house in the Ramapo Hills; (2) it is the story of the house and the people who lived in it and the reasons for its building. There are pictures that are part of the telling. And it is fun to read and to fit the pieces together as you go. Remember Kate Seredy's The Good Haster? If so you know that she can draw and tell a story too.
