With its combination of miscellaneous sight words, concept groupings, and attractive pictures, this is a useful book for...
Simple, colorful block prints are accompanied by words and phrases in bold primary print, with the English countryside’s changing seasons in the background.
The diminutive book starts in spring, with a cheerful double-page spread of flowers and the word “Flowers.” The next spread shows a boy watering a green plant, accompanied by the word “Gardening.” The layout is pleasingly consistent, using all double-page spreads and showing all words in bold, green letters. Phrases such as “Fruit and vegetables” are obvious labels, while there are other pages that add whimsical fun. For example, a bright orange tabby is called “The neighbour’s cat,” and the illustration of a girl with a piece of grass in her mouth and cherries dangling from her ears simply says, “Cherries.” (Later, the same smiling girl, sans cherries, is used to illustrate “Swing.”) Children in the U.S. will readily recognize the Halloween pumpkin and winter snowman and will be tickled by the less-familiar blue hedgehog waddling in between those sets of pages, a pear lightly perched on its back. Several of the illustrations create opportunities for the youngest children to learn new vocabulary, as older readers help them identify all the tools, insects, vegetables, or leaves. Both children depicted are white.
With its combination of miscellaneous sight words, concept groupings, and attractive pictures, this is a useful book for reading readiness. (Picture book. 2-4)Pub Date: Feb. 1, 2016

For children yearning for an island of their own, deadpan delights await in this tale of somnolent creation.
Before nighttime falls, the objects on an island are in dire need of some direction.
Part of a board-book series that includes Your Forest (2025) and Your Farm (2025), this story places the power of creation into the hands of small children. As Klassen presents each element, he offers readers instructions as to its placement. There’s no mistaking whom these objects belong to. “This is your palm tree. It can go over by the sun.” Slowly, the author/illustrator and young readers work together to build the scene. Plants, a tent, a fire (actually, “a magic fire. It will never go out”), a boat, and a most capricious bird (“he flies away sometimes but he always comes back”) are laid out on the page. Each object has at least one unblinking eye that stares out at readers. When the sun sets, those eyes all close. “Now you can sleep too and think about what you will do there tomorrow.” Sure to spark the imagination and brimming with whimsy, this deceptively simple bedtime story makes readers an active participant in the process of constructing an entire little world.
For children yearning for an island of their own, deadpan delights await in this tale of somnolent creation. (Board book. 2-4)Pub Date: Feb. 4, 2025

by Mary Peterson & Jennifer Rofé & illustrated by Mary Peterson ‧ RELEASE DATE: July 1, 2010
“Piggies in the pumpkin patch / peek / and sneak, / under crinkly, / clean sheets, / over growing, / green beans, / behind snoring, sleepy sheep, / into the clover field.” Two curious piglets romp through the clover fields and across the barnyard. They play with cats and chase squirrels until they execute an accidental muddy slide into the bull’s pen: “Squeal!!” They take off, avoiding shrieking geese and spooky trees. They make it past stinging bees and back to the pumpkin patch where snoozing Mama pig awaits…after all that, it’s definitely naptime for all! Rofé’s first and Peterson’s first to co-write as well as illustrate will be a staple for piggie-themed storytimes. The pencil-and-paint illustrations are pudgy, whimsical, frenetic fun, rendered in a muted yellow, brown and green palette. The rhythmic text flows and twists following the oinking hijinks, each preposition nicely bolded. The fun continues on the endpapers, which map the porcine expedition from start to finish.
