A fantastically giant turtle is lonely until others make themselves at home on his shell.
Seeming a bit like a riff on creation stories (though failing to acknowledge any Native American or other sources), Sherry’s story relies on readers’ willingness to suspend disbelief. Echoing the bravado of the protagonist of his debut, I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean (2008), it opens, “I’m a giant turtle, and I’m as BIG as an island.” Cheery, accompanying art, rendered in pencil and then inked and painted with watercolors and salts, depicts the giant turtle looming over a deserted island. The poor turtle is lonely until shipwrecked creatures take refuge on his shell. They end up feasting together and building homes; all is well on Turtle Island. But then the settlers become lonely for their friends and family, and they decide to depart to find them. Bereft and once again alone, the giant turtle cannot stop thinking about his new friends. Happily, they soon return with their loved ones and re-establish the Turtle Island settlement—which grows as another giant turtle arrives with a castle atop her shell and three other littler giant turtles nearby.

A muddy message about stick-to-itiveness salvaged by a winsome dino duo.
Tiny T. Rex and Pointy the stegosaurus overcome their fears and inexperience to participate in the talent show.
Inspired by the Amazing Presto, enthusiastic Tiny and apprehensive Pointy decide to do a magic act. They don top hats and wield wands, select their magic word, and enlist the help of their special assistant, Bob the teddy bear. At first, the pair expect the magic to just happen, but after careful planning and creative thinking, they find a way to make their disappearing trick work. Nervous Pointy pulls out of the performance at the last minute but in the end finds the courage to appear on stage—as Tiny puts it, “Sometimes the grandest ta-da is not making something disappear. It is when someone who disappeared bravely comes back.” Stutzman’s story touches on hard work and preparation, feelings of anxiety, and perseverance. Tiny does the majority of the narration with brief interjections from Pointy. As a result, aside from facial expressions, readers mostly learn how Pointy feels through Tiny. Because the story never shows Pointy working through fears or uncertainties, some may find the resolution a bit too easily wrapped up. Still, the two are a charming pair. Fleck’s illustrations feature sweet dinos with Tiny’s recognizable toothy grin, bright colors, and a cute supporting cast of characters. (This book was reviewed digitally.)

Intriguing illustrations, classic story structure, and irresistible rabbits add up to a winning Easter-themed treat.
Four rabbits hunt for Easter eggs in this variation on the familiar children’s call-and-response game about going on a bear or lion hunt.
The attractive cover shows the quartet of rabbits, with three adults and one baby bunny, as they set out on their hunt through a farm and surrounding countryside. The design features double-page spreads with flaps that conceal tiny animals and Easter eggs, numbered in order. These spreads alternate with scenes showing different groups of animals that the rabbits must pass among as their egg hunt continues. With each group met, the simple text includes the familiar refrain: “Can’t go over them. Can’t go under them. Can’t go around them. Got to go through them….” This continues until the rabbits find a huge, blue egg, which folds down to reveal a wolf. “Ruuuuuuuuunnnn!” Back through the ducks, bees, chicks, and lambs, until the rabbits reach their own cozy house and slam a flap door to keep the wolf out. Lunch is chocolate Easter eggs, of course. Vibrant, pastel-hued illustrations draw readers in with amusing rabbits, pleasant country settings, animal sounds, and a just-scary-enough wolf. This cleverly constructed story can be read closely, counting the eggs up to 10 and back down again and enjoying tiny details in the busy illustrations, or at speed with equal satisfaction.
