The sequel to Bloody Jack (2002) is a rousing adventure, short on character development but perfectly delicious in all other ways. Our heroine, London-born Jacky Faber, having been found out as a girl, must leave her ship and the boy she loves, taking her pirate money for tuition at an exclusive girls’ school in Boston, 1802. Cheeky as all get out, Jacky sings (lyrics of famous ballads and chanteys throughout), plays the penny whistle and concertina, learns to paint miniatures on ivory, ride a horse, and curtsey. Jacky gets busted to the servants’ quarters, but is raised up again, finds herself a good lawyer, and writes many letters to her true love Jaimy. He writes back, and various events are conveyed, but not to their recipients. Jacky wins a horse race, escapes from a predatory preacher, even saves her starchy headmistress from the thrilling end-of-the-story conflagration. But she doesn’t reach Jaimy, and the end finds her aboard a whaler, headed toward England. Breathless readers don’t have to know the first installment to thrill to this one, but they will long for the next. (Fiction. YA)

A winning game of feelingsball.
A former football star, who never thought she’d play again after she came out as transgender, steps back onto the field for one last season to help her team win state.
Grace Woodhouse used to know where she belonged. She had Division I schools lined up to recruit her, but that was before what happened during playoffs last year, before she came out as trans, and before she quit the team. Although her single father and new friend group support her, Grace feels lost as her senior year begins. When one of her old teammates asks her to help him with his technique, she quickly realizes that he and the other captains are hoping for more than her expertise from the sidelines—they want her to rejoin the team. Grace can’t resist the opportunity to play again, but her return draws unwanted national attention that makes her question her future and who she wants to be. Flashback chapters written in the second-person present tense bring Grace’s past to life, which helps maintain momentum and makes her emotional journey feel more immersive. A heartfelt, goofy, and diverse cast of secondary characters surround Grace, who’s white, as she navigates self-doubt, friendship, complicated feelings for her ex-girlfriend, and what she wants to do after graduation. Overall, this coming-of-age sports narrative is honest, gentle, and hopeful.

A summer trip helps break 18-year-old Meredith Fox out of a haze of mourning.
Her cousin’s wedding means a return to Martha’s Vineyard, a well-loved destination but one filled with bittersweet memories. It’s been a year and a half since the sudden loss of Meredith’s sister, Claire, and the grief remains strong. Meredith, though, resolves to take this time to celebrate family and bridge the rifts resulting from ghosting friends. She didn’t plan on a meet-cute/embarrassing encounter with the groom’s stepbrother, Wit. Nor did she expect a wedding-week game of Assassin, a water-gun–fueled family tradition. What starts off as a pact of sharing strategic information with Wit grows into something more as the flirting and feelings develop. Only one person can win, though, and any alliance has an expiration date. To win and honor Claire, who was a master of the game, Meredith must keep her eye on the prize. Taking place over the course of a week, the narrative is tight with well-paced reveals that disrupt predictability and keep the plot moving. Early details are picked back up, and many elements come satisfyingly full circle. The short time frame also heightens the tension of this summer romance: What will happen when they leave the bubble of the Vineyard? The mix of budding romance, competitive hijinks, a close-knit circle, as well as dealing with loss make for a satisfying read. The main cast is White.
