Things get a bit dicey when plucky Samantha experiments with her new roller skates in one frightening, hilarious inaugural “roll” through town.
Eager to try out her new roller skates, Samantha’s undaunted when her mother’s too busy to help her learn. Instead of putting the skates away as her mother instructs, Samantha puts them on and carefully cruises “through the kitchen, through the den, / Down the hall and back again.” Positive her mother won’t mind, Samantha slides out the door and skates down the sidewalk and up Hawthorn Hill, where “she doesn’t note the long, STEEP slope” until it’s too late and she’s speeding downhill, very much out of control. Clueless how to brake, Samantha creates havoc as she flies by Will chasing butterflies, bumps into Matt playing ball, snags Katie’s kite string, collides with an outdoor bridal party, “Slaloms through the marching band, / Overturns the ice cream stand” and soars up a skateboard ramp. The jaunty text in easy-to-remember couplets starts slowly as Samantha inches along on her new skates and accelerates into a sweeping crescendo memorializing her downward descent. Colored-pencil–and-watercolor illustrations rely on energized, quick lines to maximize Samantha’s exaggerated facial expressions and frantic body language as she careens across the page.

A rousing read.
The contrast between darkness and the area illuminated by a flashlight fascinates children, but this title kicks the fun up a notch.
Three kids—a white child with long hair and a baseball cap, another white youngster clutching a teddy bear, and a black boy with a flashlight (the narrator)—are heading for a summer sleepover in the treehouse. Wherever the storyteller focuses the light, the real transforms into the imagined, and the green/gray of night fills with subdued color. Observant eyes will note that even in the first scene, fence posts morph into tree trunks in the glow, and a striped cat becomes a tiger slinking into the “forest.” “FLASHLIGHT,” written once, is the subject of every rhymed couplet that follows: directed under the porch, it “Casts a glow upon a wall / down a dark and ancient hall / as inky shadows rise and fall, / dancing… / to no sound at all.” Hieroglyphs, columns, and an object that is half baseball/half ancient urn fill the space—and are those shadows dogs? Fist-bumping? (Closer examination reveals a humorous twist.) The modest swimming pool inspires a pirate escapade; a rope ladder links to a hot air balloon rescue. The delicious language and ingenious metamorphoses, rendered in pencil and colored digitally, are tied directly to classic books stacked near the sleeping bags.

A superhero truck? Just what the world needs!
Many young kids love superheroes and trucks and getting dirty, so what could be better than a picture book that glorifies all three? Clarence, a rather ordinary-looking dirty pickup truck, and Bruno, a nattier-looking cement mixer, are best friends, but readers soon learn that with a quick wash job, Clarence turns into the bright red Mighty Truck. Mighty Truck is supposed to keep his identity secret, but when faced with a perilous emergency at Muddymania, held in Axleburg Arena, he has to make a quick decision. Can he use his superpowers (without revealing his secret identity) to prevent exhausted Flo, the watering truck who has created all the mud for the special event, from crashing haphazardly into the all-truck crowd? Like a four-wheeled Jimmy Olsen, Bruno forges ahead, and Clarence, aka Mighty Truck, must follow. The rescue is accomplished, but Bruno learns the secret. The bromance is sealed, but is there a whiff of old-fashioned anti-feminism in the air? Why is it Flo, the female truck, who must be rescued? Most kids won’t care, and the Adobe Photoshop digital illustrations are full of all kinds of moving vehicles with faces, resembling childhood favorites like Little Toot and Thomas the Tank Engine.
