In this action-packed historical page-turner, destitute siblings Joe and Annie (a trance medium) escape from an apprenticeship with an abusive farmer and make their way to Manchester, hoping to find their mother. It’s 1830s England, and the kids survive with help from a self-sufficient philosophical tramp, an enigmatic Dog-woman, performers in a traveling fair and a clandestine radical newspaper publisher. Danger and abject poverty lurk in every corner of this sweeping, episodic narrative, under which swirls the author’s keen interest in the history of the urban poor and social reform. She tackles a great deal—deaths of workhouse children, the great cholera epidemic, the repeal of the stamp tax and the complicated class issues endemic to Manchester, an industrial “feudal city” on the verge of change—though often provides only a surface introduction to the complex matters of those times. It is the value of a good story that's at the heart of this adventurous 19th-century tale, and Michael via her intrepid protagonist Joe tells a swell one. A clever and entertaining college campus romance.
Two intertwined “mortal enemies” vie for a coveted college zine position.
Sadie is determined to become a staff writer for the zine of her dream school, Virginia’s Maple Ride University. After working tirelessly for years, Sadie was accepted to the university, and now she’s on her way to the Newsbag interest meeting in pursuit of a staff position. But she collides with Sebastian Adams, her longtime school competitor, and the smoothie he’s holding spills all over her. This encounter also reveals unfortunate news: Seb, the Instagram star whose channel, “Adams’ Apples,” is hugely popular, has been taken off Maple Ride’s waitlist. Seb and Sadie have a long, involved history, having practically been raised together since birth by parents who are best friends. Newsbag is highly selective with a national reputation, and the co-editors inform meeting attendees that only one staff writer position is available, setting off a fierce rivalry while simultaneously showing Sadie that her feelings for Seb might be something other than competitive disdain. The college—with its quirky and hilarious student organizations, such as the Sad Bitch Book Club and the Random Acts of Chaos Club—is the perfect setting for the witty snark and blooming rivals-to-lovers romance. Readers will be drawn into the competition while rooting for a happy ending between these nemeses. Sadie and Seb (who’s bisexual) are cued white.

A thoroughly enjoyable romp that’s also rich in self-discovery and romance.
Recent high school graduate Gemma Sun goes on a treasure hunt in Taiwan.
Gemma, who’s from “Podunksville, Massachusetts,” is looking ahead with excited trepidation to attending Amherst College. But covering the tuition weighs on her mind since she and her single mom have limited finances. So she’s shocked to hear that her grandfather in Taipei, whom she had believed to be long dead, was in fact estranged from her mom and died only weeks earlier. His attorney shows up with their inheritance: a box filled with old newspaper clippings. Gemma quickly realizes that the articles contain clues hinting at a big treasure for her to find in Taiwan. Her mother agrees to let her go—if she can pay her own way. The tightly written plot moves quickly as Gemma swallows her pride, asking Harvard-bound ex-boyfriend and nemesis Xander Pan to allow her to participate in the all-expenses-paid Taiwanese American Roots Pursuit program he founded (and which she previously scorned). There Gemma explores Taiwanese culture—and her own independence. As she solves puzzles and her hunt for her grandfather’s treasure escalates, she also must collaborate with Xander to get to the solution, bringing them closer together in the process. Chao artfully weaves in themes of Asian American identity, generational trauma, and compassion as each clue that Gemma uncovers leads to another compelling revelation.
