EROTIC INTERLUDES: Tales Told By Women

Another in a growing collection of erotica written specifically for women, by women. These distinctions are important, says Barbach, a clinical psychologist who wants to legitimize--and celebrate--the sexual aspect of women's lives. To date, she says, it's an area that has been underrepresented in literature. Traditionally, she says, ""sexual feelings have been considered base, unacceptable, degrading or the more or less exclusive province of men."" Stories written by women differ from those written by men in that the sex is more sensual, more relaxed--passionate but not violent or harsh, Barbach notes. Women are not raped, molested or in any way degraded. That line separates erotica from pornography. And, in a refreshing departure, this collection includes stories that deal with the additional issues of aging, physical disability and menopause. One interesting note: several of the authors chose pseudonyms, one in fear of losing a scholarship and another for fear of what her colleagues and family would think about a 58-year-old writing erotica. There are 21 stories. The beauty--and effectiveness--of them is, as always, in the eye of the beholder. And, as in flavors of ice cream, it's nice to have a choice.
