Someone new has come to stay/in 13A, in 13A""--but though Everett Anderson hopes for another boy the newcomers turn out to be ""a family of shes""--among them Maria, that ""no fun"" kind of girl who wins at ball and races. How Everett makes friends with Maria--she invites him into 13A after school when he loses his apartment key--is unfolded in ten short rhymes that express his thoughts on Maria's Mama's tacos, his own Mama's scolding about the key, etc. More of a story, then, than Everett Anderson has given us before, and though it's a relatively skimpy one it's worked in neatly and unobtrusively. And Everett Anderson's other friends will like Ann Grifalconi's free pen and ink drawings, which match the easy flow of Clifton's lines far better than did her woodcuts for Everett Anderson's Year (1974).
