MAISY'S BUS

From the Go with Maisy series

Another solid, engaging piece from Maisy and Co.

Mouse Maisy drives a green bus to the beach.

The Go with Maisy series continues with this board book and the concurrently published Maisy’s Sailboat. Both books involve Maisy driving a vehicle and picking up friends along the way. The rounded, die-cut book is unusual and pleasant for little readers to hold, making this an excellent read for car or bus rides (though possibly not when out on a sail). As Maisy drives her bus through her town she picks up Tallulah, Dotty, and other friends described by bold, black, childlike text. The stylized illustrations with a primary color palette fill the double-page–spread illustrations with cute, black-outlined images that will engage young readers, especially fans of the white mouse and her pals. The text offers some vocabulary that’s potentially new to readers. Dotty is “the first passenger”; in the final scene, the text crows that “they’ve arrived!” While neither book is an essential addition to the toddler library, both are agreeable-enough reads.

Another solid, engaging piece from Maisy and Co. (Board book. 1-3)

UP TO MY KNEES!

From the Storytelling Math series

Adults looking to engage little ones in early math concepts will not be disappointed.

A child uses a familiar standard to measure and compare the growth of a seed.

It is spring, and a child is in the garden planting a sunflower seed. Eventually, after adding dirt, water, sun, and time, the seed sprouts. Bit by bit the seed reaches toe height, then knees, waist, and shoulders. By summer, the plant is taller than the child and produces a giant sunflower. The backmatter explains that these types of experiences will help children understand measuring tools later on. A “Try This!” section offers a few suggestions to encourage further activities to help children grasp the concepts of size and measurement. Other books in the series are Circle! Sphere! (readers learn about shapes as a group of children blow bubbles); The Last Marshmallow (division and fractions are simply presented when two children with a cup of hot cocoa each must figure out how to share three marshmallows); and What Will Fit? (spatial sense is explored as a child at the farmers market decides what will fit best in the basket). All books have a brief explanation of the math concept presented and a concluding section with suggestions for further related activities. Multiaward-winning Lin presents the concepts in easy-to-understand short sentences paired with simple and attractive illustrations. The children depicted are Black and Asian.

Adults looking to engage little ones in early math concepts will not be disappointed. (Board book. 1-3)

JUST THE WAY YOU ARE

From the Emma Dodd's Love You Books series

A delightful offering that will be especially welcome as a gift for baby showers and new parents.

A doting parent offers tender assurances to a tiny child.

An adult tiger vows that they will be everlastingly devoted to their baby and at their side in every circumstance, under all conditions, no matter what, no matter when—and without the child’s having to change for any reason…ever. The pair, whose genders are unspecified, are endearingly depicted very close to each other, their bodies often entwined, over the course of a day and night. The enraptured cub listens carefully, taking the warm, comforting, empowering message to heart, not missing a word as the pair explore their habitat, reinforcing the idea of togetherness close to home and farther afield. Loving words like these from parents to children can’t be said often enough—and children can’t hear such esteem-building confidences often enough. The tiger’s soothing words are delivered in gentle, lilting verse. The very sweet illustrations, created digitally, depict this appealing duo expressively; especially charming are scenes of the pair captured beneath a starry night sky. Though there’s little new here, parent-child affirmations are always welcome. Grown-ups sharing this title shouldn’t be surprised if their own offspring want to hear it more than once. (This book was reviewed digitally.)

A delightful offering that will be especially welcome as a gift for baby showers and new parents. (Picture book. 1-3)
