THE TURNABOUT YEAR

Going on twelve and already skipped to the eighth and last grade of her prairie school, Lucy is angling to spend next year at the big high school in Minneapolis and panicked at the possibility of being the only big kid in town after brother Amory goes away to a private academy and the Owens kids are transferred out with their minister father. By now it's well established that nothing new ever happens in Wales, North Dakota; however, there's still an unforced nostalgic glow surrounding the igloo the kids build in winter, spring housekeeping when Father drops a soot-filled stove-pipe in the spick-and-span kitchen, and rumors of German spy activity over at the local blind pig. One can even share some of Lucy's outrage when she's marked down in the ""personal opinion"" section of the state exams for having written in favor of the scalping of missionaires. A sense of experience nearly outgrown, or perhaps material nearly used up, pervades, but anyone who's been with Lucy under The Spell of the Northern Lights (1975) will be pleased to see her safely launched into the big world.
