Rarity’s left St. Louis behind, along with the boyfriend who dumped her when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and opened a bookstore in Sedona, Arizona, where her high school bestie, Sam Aarons, owns a crystal shop. She decides to organize a book club for cancer survivors. The first night, only Shirley Prescott shows up, but slowly she builds a diverse group, including Sam as an honorary member. Some are into alternative treatments; others, like Martha Redding, are very private. Sam invites Rarity along on a group hike led by attractive and personable Archer Ender. There, she meets the Andersons, a couple who become some of her best customers. Rarity, who’s thinking of adopting a dog, ends up with one in a very odd way when detective Drew Anderson calls on her to talk about Martha, who’s gone missing, and she offers to take in Martha’s dog, a diminutive Yorkie, Killer. When Martha’s found murdered, Killer becomes Rarity’s constant companion, and the Tuesday night book club adds sleuthing to their profile. Drew, who’s warming up to Sam, is unhappy about their plans and enlists his old friend Archer to keep an eye on Rarity. Meanwhile, group members offer possible suspects from Martha’s boyfriend to the staff at an alternative cancer treatment center Martha attended. Romance is in the air for Rarity and Sam, but it doesn’t distract them from following up clues to unmask a killer.

That college love affair you never got over? Come wallow in this gorgeous version of it.
A love triangle among young literati has a long and complicated aftermath.
King’s narrator doesn’t reveal her name until the very last page, but Sam and Yash, the brainy stars of her 17th-century literature class, call her Jordan. Actually, at first they refer to her as Daisy, for Daisy Buchanan of The Great Gatsby, but when they learn she came to their unnamed college on a golf scholarship, they change it to Jordan for Gatsby’s golfer friend. The boys are housesitting for a professor who’s spending a year at Oxford, living in a cozy, book-filled Victorian Jordan visits for the first time after watching The Deer Hunter at the student union on her first date with Sam. As their relationship proceeds, Jordan is practically living at the house herself, trying hard not to notice that she’s actually in love with Yash. A Baptist, Sam has an everything-but policy about sex that only increases the tension. The title of the book refers to a nickname for the king of hearts from an obscure card game the three of them play called Sir Hincomb Funnibuster, and both the game and variations on the moniker recur as the novel spins through and past Jordan’s senior year, then decades into the future. King is a genius at writing love stories—including Euphoria (2014), which won the Kirkus Prize—and her mostly sunny version of the campus novel is an enjoyable alternative to the current vogue for dark academia. Tragedies are on the way, though, as we know they must be, since nothing gold can stay and these darn fictional characters seem to make the same kinds of stupid mistakes that real people do. Tenderhearted readers will soak the pages of the last chapter with tears.

An anonymous note left in a used book creates a surprising love triangle in Seattle.
April knows she’s become a bit too isolated while working remotely for an online real estate company. Her only social interactions come from awkward blind dates and apologetic texts from busy friends who have left her behind. Perhaps it’s this loneliness that causes her to take drastic, romantic action. She leaves an anonymous note in a book she sells to local bookstore Read the Room—it’s meant for the eyes of the cute flannel-wearing man who works at the used-book counter. But that cute employee, Westley, doesn’t see the note before putting the book—Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz—on the shelf. Instead, it’s found by widowed mother Laura, who thinks it’s Westley’s way of covertly communicating with her, and she responds by leaving a note in a copy of The Hunger Games, as April instructed in her original letter. Westley, meanwhile, has no idea why women are staring at him from the young adult section—he’s focused on a movie that’s filming at Read the Room. As April and Laura unwittingly leave each other letters, the many characters in the bookstore’s orbit get to know each other and unlikely connections form. In her debut novel, Seattle Times arts critic Macdonald writes her own love letter to bookstores, and the community and comfort they can provide. The writing has the feel of a British rom-com, despite the Seattle setting, which gives the story a cozy air. Although there are romances brewing, the story is ultimately about the courage it takes to go after the life you want.
