Romantic relaxation, with more intelligence and substance than most, as two sisters, Hester who was pretty and Nell who was smart, provide a contrast in domestic and career success. Hester, whose attractions concealed a calculating eye for luxury, divorces her husband when he is no longer able to provide for her as substantially as before, is the cause of his suicide, and ends in a second loveless marriage which is also a very rich one. Nell, whose career in an insurance business and political activities on the side does not substitute for the hope of marriage, is attracted to Barney Munro, does not admit to it particularly when he is more taken by Hester's prettiness than her capabilities, but at the end is rewarded by the return of his affection...
