VALIANT DUST

A tale of an average woman clinging to her standards in a strange environment, in a story of Elspeth Campbell who came out to Tientsin, China, in 1880, from Scotland, to marry Angus MacClaren. China of 75 years ago is shown in colorful detail, the China that hated the ""foreign devils"", the China that was the victim of the stupidity and cupidity of the whites, all building up to a detailed account of the Boxer Rebellion and the part the MacClaren's played in that desperate siege. The life of the little white colony, the growing family, Elspeth's grief over her husband's infidelities, and the dreams of her own lost romance build a story which holds the interest throughout, in spite of the fact that the background dominates the plot.
