Marguerite Henry is aiming here not only at her usual horsey audience but also at other children suffering the pangs of sibling rivalry. It's a neat trick, for when the previously attentive human family pass up young Chip (foal of Chocolate) to admire stable newcomer Strawberry, he acts on the urge that human children are forbidden to indulge--he bites the baby. (Of course, he's severely scolded by his mother.) And there's more appeal than you'd expect from the played out illustrations and the author's anthropomorphic psychology when Chip, in a mutual fly swishing session, comes to recognize that there is room for both colts in the pasture.
